Tolkien Adventure - From Shire to Shire

Middle England - quiet lanes, babbling rivers, lakes & forests an adventure in the Goyt Valley

From 130 British pounds
Beehive Inn SK23 9UT

Service Description

Starting at the Beeehive Inn in the 'honeypot' village of Combs, this is one of our favourite one way tours. It completes at Wincle near to the Ship Inn and Brewery. The tour follows part of the Mid Shires Way and feels as though it returns to the safety of the Shires with an array of landscapes and adventures in between. The route climbs out of Combs steeply on minor roads and around Ladder Hill to descend into Shallcross. (Alternatively for the more experienced rider take Long Lane to Shallcross and navigate a rugged, stony and gnarly track) Segments of the tour from Shawcross to Fernilee Reservoir via Taxal may require a dismount and push but the views are worth it and once the reservoir is reached it is easy going from there. Memorable views abound from scenic forest tracks above the lake and then a climb to just below Cats Tor. Minor roads then descend pass an old chapel through pastureland before reaching Bottom of the Oven. Macclesfield Forest provides a distinct change of scene enabling far reaching views to the west and a car free surface to traverse down to Ridgegate Reservoir. Perhaps a short detour to the Leather’s Smithy Pub or just continue on minor roads passing little hamlets to reach the wonderful Ship Inn and Wincle Brewery. Avoid dragons and spiders on your way!
