Service Description

Our Peake Pilgrimage Tour is based upon a famous long distance footpath Pilgrimage which normally takes 3 to 4 days to complete on foot. As with the walk the tour invites a visit to 12 churches scattered along the route with an opportunity to stamp your visit at each church. The journey starts at Ilam a pilgrim destination since medieval times and the shrine tomb of St Bertram found inside Holy Cross church. The tour then passes above the beautiful Dovedale Valley and out towards Milldale an enchanting picture postcard village where the primitive Chapel is your first and smallest visitation. Minor roads then take you up into the wonderful saxon village of Alstonfield where St Peters Church can be found. Minor roads are generally followed into Hartington where St Giles’ and a cheese shop can be visited. Tracks and trails are then followed out to Monyash and Over Haddon where as well as the churches some lovely hostelries and cafes also provide a welcome rest. It is then onwards to Bakewell (home of the Pudding) and beyond to the enchanting Chatsworth village of Edensor. The pilgrimage travels north avoiding where possible busier roads to visit Baslow, Curbar and Grindleford. Wonderful scenery, valleys and villages with many opportunities for refreshment are happened upon before heading back just south of Eyam following a farm track to take you into Stoney Middleton. This minor detour allows the steep Jacobs Ladder bridleway to be avoided. The final journey retraces the old road back to the final destination of your pilgrimage the church at Eyam. Eyam provides a rich history of houses and graves of those who endured the plague in isolation rather than infect the surrounding villages. A poignant conclusion to your pilgrimage.
