Service Description

The tour starts from our Winster Hub at the Miners Standard. Minor roads and farm tracks take you past the relics of old lead mines scattered across Bonsall Moor. Keep your eyes open for UFO’s as this is the 'Roswell' of England! Unless abducted you will soon reach the pretty hamlet of Slaley. From here it is a stones throw to 'the dale' in Bonsall home to the world hen racing championship. A quick ride through the village takes you past the Fountain cafe then up through the main street, eventually exiting the village to the north to find Salters Way, an ancient trading route. This minor road winds down into Matlock with wonderful views of the Derwent Valley below. Passing the Railway Station you will soon find plenty of places for a coffee in town and to explore it more before reaching the Matlock to Rowsley cycle path. This former Midland Railway line is now traffic free and passes through Darley Dale at the lovely Whitworth Park and then continues on to Rowsley via it's old station and sidings. The Derwent is crossed and then narrow lanes take you past Caudwell Mill and then it's a steep (but easy on an eBike) climb up to Stanton in Peak offering magnificent views of Haddon Hall below. At Stanton there may be time to visit the Flying Childers for refreshment or wait until you have navigated around the eastern side of Stanton Moor via quiet and pretty minor roads (closed to motor vehicles) and climb back into Birchover. Here there may be time to learn the secrets of ‘the Druids’ at the pub with the same name, or just follow a delightful forgotten road back to Winster. A final tour of this delightful village and a final hill back up to the Miners Standard.
