  • Derbyshire Estates Explorer Tour

From the Peak Edge Hotel our route joins tracks and minor roads to travel west towards Bakewell through magnificent historical Estates. 360 degree views from the top of the moor offer vast landscape vistas and an abundance of interesting fauna and flora. The route initially descends on a gravel and unsurfaced bridleway down between Holy and Harewood Moor. The most technically difficult descent of the day. It is then lovely minor roads across the Moor before another unsurfaced bridleway into the Chatsworth Estate is taken. The Derwent is crossed near Carlton Lees. It is then a superb climb on little used roads high into the Estate eventually revealing amazing views of parkland, Chatsworth House and its fountains below. A descent across Capability Brown parkland often between sheep and deer soon brings you to the House itself where a coffee could be taken or maybe wait until pretty village of Edensor is reached. It is then quiet estate tracks and minor roads into Bakewell for a pudding perhaps! Coombs Lane is followed from Bakewell out to Rowsley through wonderful gated farm tracks high above the Haddon Estate. At Rowsley it is necessary to push the bike through the Grouse and Claret car park to access the Peak Village for a bit of retail therapy or a coffee. A short stretch of road leaves the village behind before climbing into Darley Hillside and back onto the Moor. This quiet route allows for a more direct return home for a well-deserved refreshment back at the Peak Edge Hotel. Difficulty - Black Advanced Tour Theme - Historic Sites Surface - Minor roads, tracks, bridleways (gravel and grass) cycle trails. Distance - 25 miles Time allocated - 6 hours Refreshment Stop Options - Peak Edge Hotel, Chatsworth, Edensor, Bakewell & Peak Village Tour Ref - 38

  • 'Its all Downhill from Here" in Dovedale

This magnificent scenic tour starts at the source of the Manifold River close to Flash (1519 ft) the highest village in the UK. It closely follows the path of the meandering river down to Dove Dale. As you would imagine the route is predominantly downhill and easy on the battery! From Flash Bar Café minor roads take you steeply down into the remote village of Hollinsclough (secret views of dales that you won't find on any postcards) and then pass between the Manifold and Dove to reach the market town of Longnor. A tour of the village and the route then follows rarely used farm roads to a cafe and visitor centre at Hulme End or maybe take a slight detour to the Manifold Inn! Beyond the Manifold Trail which is mainly traffic free providing a flat trail previously used as a narrow-gauge "milk" railway line. The peaceful secluded route crosses both sides of the Manifold passing through a tunnel, bypassing old mines, happening upon Wetton Mill (now a lovely café) and Thor's Cave. Upon leaving the Manifold Track minor roads climb steeply for a mile or so to allow access to the adjacent valley of Hopedale and allow perhaps another detour to the Watts Russell seen temptingly below. Then back through the villages of Stanhope and Ilam before finishing at the Isaac Walton Hotel "the gateway to Dovedale". Amazing scenery that only Dovedale can offer. Difficulty - Easy Blue Tour Theme - Rivers & Reservoirs, Geology & Landscapes Surface - Minor roads and cycle trails Distance - 19 miles Time allocated - 6 hours Refreshment stops - Flash, Longnor, Hulme End, Hopedale & Dovedale Tour Ref - 13

  • The Peak Pilgrimage Ilam to Eyam

Our Peake Pilgrimage Tour is based upon a famous long distance footpath Pilgrimage which normally takes 3 to 4 days to complete on foot. As with the walk the tour invites a visit to 12 churches scattered along the route with an opportunity to stamp your visit at each church. The journey starts at Ilam a pilgrim destination since medieval times and the shrine tomb of St Bertram found inside Holy Cross church. The tour then passes above the beautiful Dovedale Valley and out towards Milldale an enchanting picture postcard village where the primitive Chapel is your first and smallest visitation. Minor roads then take you up into the wonderful saxon village of Alstonfield where St Peters Church can be found. Minor roads are generally followed into Hartington where St Giles’ and a cheese shop can be visited. Tracks and trails are then followed out to Monyash and Over Haddon where as well as the churches some lovely hostelries and cafes also provide a welcome rest. It is then onwards to Bakewell (home of the Pudding) and beyond to the enchanting Chatsworth village of Edensor. The pilgrimage travels north avoiding where possible busier roads to visit Baslow, Curbar and Grindleford. Wonderful scenery, valleys and villages with many opportunities for refreshment are happened upon before heading back just south of Eyam following a farm track to take you into Stoney Middleton. This minor detour allows the steep Jacobs Ladder bridleway to be avoided. The final journey retraces the old road back to the final destination of your pilgrimage the church at Eyam. Eyam provides a rich history of houses and graves of those who endured the plague in isolation rather than infect the surrounding villages. A poignant conclusion to your pilgrimage.
